  • Should I visit Vieques?

In our humble opinion, absolutely 😉 Just 6 miles from the main island, Vieques is an ideal destination for those looking to enjoy tranquility, natural beauty, and a touch of adventure away from the bustling main island of Puerto Rico. The island is home to many wild (some ferril) horses that habitat the island. You can find them strolling down the sidewalks, in the fields or on the beach. Vieques, Puerto Rico, offers a unique and captivating experience for travelers looking for an island getaway. Known for its stunning natural beauty and relaxed atmosphere, Vieques features:

Bioluminescent Bays: One of the world's most remarkable natural phenomena, where microorganisms in the water light up and create a glowing effect at night. We have the brightest in the world.

Beautiful Beaches: With miles of pristine sands and clear waters, the beaches are perfect for relaxation, snorkeling, and water sports. We are often have a ranking for best beaches worldwide.

Rich History: Explore historical sites like the ruins of sugar plantations and the Vieques National Wildlife Refuge, which offers insights into the island's past and its natural environment.

Charming Local Culture: The small-town feel and friendly locals provide an authentic Puerto Rican experience.

  • How do I get to Vieques?

Getting to Vieques from San Juan involves a few steps. Here are the main ways to travel:

By Ferry: You can drive or take a taxi from San Juan to Ceiba, which is a little over an hour to the east. From Ceiba, you can catch a ferry to Vieques. The ferry ride takes about 35-60 minutes depending on the ferry boat. There is a paid parking lot if you drive to Ceiba. You can also take an uber or taxi. You can book ferry tickets online at https://www.puertoricoferry.com/  The ferry departs from Ceiba and costs $2-3 per person (plus online fees) each way.

By Air: If budget allows, you can take a direct flight from Isla Grande San Juan to Vieques, it’s a little less than a 30 minute flight. This is the quickest and most convenient method.  You can also take a direct flight from Ceiba. From Ceiba the flight is about 10 minutes, but you will need to drive to Ceiba, about 70-90 minutes to the east, possibly longer depending on traffic. There is a paid parking lot if you drive to Ceiba. You can also take an uber or taxi. You can book tickets at https://viequesairlink.com/ - we recommend you book far in advanced as these are small planes and they sell out often. Flights one way depending on the airport and refundable/non-refundable range from $49 - $119.

By Boat: You can also book private boat charters from Fajardo. Be ready for a bumpy ride and usually unprotected by the sun. We don’t have any tour guides we can recommend but there are probably a few you can find online.

Getting to Ceiba/Fajardo is easy by rental car, but note that you’ll have to park your rental at the ferry terminal or airport and coordinate separate transportation to get around Vieques, essentially paying for 2 cars per day for your visit.

Each option offers a different balance of cost, convenience, and time efficiency, so you can choose based on your preferences and budget.

  • Where should I stay in Vieques?

If you are looking for an adult only, ocean front resort with an infinity pool overlooking the water, and an onsite restaurant and bar, look no further than the Blue Horizon Boutique Resort. It is the nicest hotel on the island of Vieques, in our humble opinion. It’s a must stay if you aren’t traveling with kids. The guaranteed best rates can be found directly on their site https://bluehorizonboutiqueresort.com/

If you are looking for a family friendly resort with stunning ocean and island views in a central location of Vieques with an onsite restaurant and bar, your best bet is the Old Crow Hotel & Suites. All of the rooms have kitchenettes and they have studios, 1 bedrooms, 2 bedrooms & even a 4 bedroom penthouse suite. The guaranteed best rates can be found directly on their site https://oldcrowhotel.com/

  • How should I get around Vieques?

Vieques is a small island that is easy to get around with your own transport. Unlike San Juan, there is no Uber on Vieques & taxis are not exactly easy to come by. There are so many great beaches to visit but some of those roads are quite rough. We definitely recommned renting a Jeep when you visit.  We recommend these local rental car companies https://islandjeeprental.com/ 787-741-0190 & https://www.coquicarrental.com/ 787-741-3696. We do not recommend golf carts as there have been many accidents on the island with these. They do not drive as fast, you are not protected from the sun and we do have wild horses.

  • What should I do in Vieques?

Vieques, Puerto Rico, is a captivating destination known for its unspoiled beauty and serene atmosphere. Here are some must-do activities when visiting Vieques:

Bioluminescent Bay: Experience the magic of Mosquito Bay, the brightest bioluminescent bay in the world. The glow in the water is caused by microorganisms and is best enjoyed on a moonless night, either by kayak or electric boat.

Beaches: Spend time on some of the island's beautiful beaches. Sun Bay Beach is perfect for a relaxing day, while Playa Caracas (Red Beach) offers stunning snorkeling opportunities.

Horseback Riding: Explore the lush landscapes of Vieques on horseback, riding through beaches, hills, and forests.

Boating: Charter with a local boat company and experience the “road less traveled”. From the sea, you get to access beaches that are not accessible by roads.

Snorkeling: Vieques has crystal clear waters and beautiful sealife to see. Always pay attention to the weather and currents as these can be dangerous.

Historical Tours: Visit the Fortín Conde de Mirasol Museum, a restored fort that now serves as a museum showcasing the island's history and culture.

Nature Reserves: The Vieques National Wildlife Refuge covers much of the island and offers hiking, bird watching, and stunning natural scenery. They have so many beaches, they numbered them. We like #11 in La Chiva personally & Sun Bay.

Local Cuisine: Try local Puerto Rican dishes and seafood at the restaurants in Esperanza and Isabel II, the two main towns on the island. We recommend Carambola Restaurant in Esperanza, an ocean front treat with great food & views. It offers the best breakfast on the island, lunch and dinner https://bluehorizonboutiqueresort.com/attraction-carambola-restaurant/

Vieques provides a peaceful retreat with its natural charm and slower pace of life, making it ideal for those looking to unwind and enjoy nature.

  • Should I visit Culebra?

Culebra, Puerto Rico, is a serene and picturesque destination ideal for travelers seeking a tranquil escape with breathtaking natural beauty. Here's what Culebra has to offer:

Wildlife Observation: The Culebra National Wildlife Refuge offers opportunities to observe seabirds, turtles, and other wildlife in their natural habitats.

  • How should I get around Culebra?

Vieques is a small island that is easy to get around with your own transport. Unlike San Juan, there is no Uber on Vieques & taxis are not exactly easy to come by. There are a few beaches to visit and the roads are pretty good. It’s easy to get around with a car or even a golf cart. There are a few companies that rent these on the island.

  • How do I get to your hotel?

The easiest way to get to Acacia Boutique Hotel from the airport or cruise terminal is by Uber or taxi. We can easily be found on the Uber app, google maps, Waze, apple maps. We are about 10-15 minutes from either the airport or cruise terminal. Our address is 8 Taft Street, Condado, San Juan, Puerto Rico 00911

  • Do I need to rent a car? Should I rent a car?

We are located in a great walkable area to see many attractions. The best way to get around is by foot, taxi or Uber. There are Taxis and Ubers easily accessible as well as public buses, the Metropolitan Bus Authority (AMA), see routes here *https://welcome.topuertorico.org/pdf/mapas_ama.pdf with times here https://www.dtop.pr.gov/ama

We do not have parking at the hotel but there is free street parking & paid lots within walking distance. If you are here for more than a week and want to get “out of the city” to see the island, a rental car for a day or two can be convenient. There are a few options locally.

  • Are pets allowed in the hotel?

  • What are the must-see beaches?

San Juan, Puerto Rico, offers some of the Caribbean's most beautiful and accessible beaches. Here are the beaches we recommend when visiting San Juan:

Condado Beach: Located in the trendy Condado neighborhood, this beach is popular for its golden sands, azure waters, and vibrant atmosphere. It's surrounded by numerous hotels, restaurants, and bars, making it a perfect spot for tourists looking for convenience and amenities. This beach has a very strong rip current. Please be very careful and we would not recommend swimming in deep water where you cannot stand.

Isla Verde Beach: This is one of the most popular beaches in San Juan, known for its beautiful stretch of white sand and excellent swimming conditions. Isla Verde attracts both locals and tourists and offers a variety of water sports, beach bars, and luxury accommodations.

Escambrón Beach: A Blue Flag beach, Escambrón is well-loved for its clean sand, clear waters, and snorkeling opportunities right off the shore. It's also family-friendly, with lifeguards on duty, picnic areas, and facilities.

Ocean Park Beach: Popular with the younger crowd and kite surfers, Ocean Park Beach is a wide, beautiful beach between Condado and Isla Verde. It’s less commercialized and generally quieter than its neighbors, offering more space to relax and enjoy water sports. This is the beach you are closest to.

Playa Peña: This small beach near Old San Juan is a bit of a hidden gem. It offers stunning views of the Capitol Building and is less crowded, providing a more serene experience.

These beaches not only provide beautiful scenery and swimming but also offer a variety of activities and amenities to enhance your visit to San Juan. Please be very careful when swimming. There are strong rip currents and no lifeguards on duty. Unfortunately, there have been many drownings at the beaches in Puerto Rico, especially Condado Beach.

  • Where are the Bioluminescent Bays?

Puerto Rico is famous for its bioluminescent bays (bio bays), which are among the few remaining in the world. These bays contain microorganisms, called dinoflagellates, that glow when agitated. Here are the main bioluminescent bays in Puerto Rico and how you can visit them:

Mosquito Bay (Vieques): Cited as the brightest bioluminescent bay in the world, Mosquito Bay is located on the island of Vieques, an offshore island of Puerto Rico. The best way to experience its glow is by kayak on a moonless night to avoid light pollution. Several tour companies on Vieques offer guided night tours that respect the delicate ecosystem of the bay.

Laguna Grande (Fajardo): This bio bay near the northeastern tip of Puerto Rico's main island is another popular spot. You can explore Laguna Grande through guided kayak tours after sunset. These tours typically begin at the Las Croabas park in Fajardo. The mangrove-lined channel leading to the bay adds an extra layer of adventure and beauty to the experience.

La Parguera (Lajas): Located in the southwest of Puerto Rico, La Parguera is unique because it allows motorized boat tours, which are not permitted in the other bio bays. This bay is less bright compared to Mosquito Bay or Laguna Grande but offers the opportunity for night-time snorkeling among the glowing waters.

    Tips for Visiting:

Booking a Tour: It's recommended to book a tour with a reputable company. These tours are usually led by knowledgeable guides who can provide insights about the ecosystem and help ensure that the environmental impact is minimized.

Best Viewing Conditions: The best time to see the bioluminescence is on a new moon night when it's darkest. Avoid times when the moon is full.

Eco-Friendly Practices: Choose tours that use kayaks or electric boats to prevent pollution and protect the dinoflagellates.

These bioluminescent bays offer a magical and unforgettable experience, highlighting the natural beauty and unique ecology of Puerto Rico.
